  7. 3.10*  11/17/93  Added Netware revision on network screen. It appears as
  8.                  a letter after the version. Also on the Network screen,
  9.                  fixed MLID version bug that would cause version 2.01 to
  10.                  appear as 2.1.
  11. 3.09      11/93  Added Current Directory report to Snooper's disk
  12.                  information.
  13. 3.08      11/93  Snooper will now accept long forms for its command line
  14.                  parameters and switches, making Snooper batch files
  15.                  self-documenting. It still accepts the single-letter
  16.                  abbreviations. Because of this change, you may no
  17.                  longer join command line switches. For example,
  18.                  "snooper -bq" is no longer acceptable; you would need
  19.                  to use "snooper -b q." See the manual and Snooper's
  20.                  first help screen for more details. 
  21. 3.07      11/93  Fixed the problem that caused Micro Channel systems to
  22.                  lock up in the Diagnostics screen.
  23. 3.06      11/93  In the IDE Model report, if the drive is a Conner
  24.                  Peripherals, Snooper now removes the word "Peripherals"
  25.                  so the model name itself is visible in the report.
  26. 3.05      11/93  Fixed Pentium detection (it was reporting "Hexium").
  27.                  Adjusted the Clock Speed report to better differentiate
  28.                  between 60- and 66-MHz Pentiums (Pentia?). For CPUs
  29.                  with integrated math coprocessors (i.e., the 486 and
  30.                  Pentium), Snooper now reports "internal" instead of
  31.                  "built in" for the NDP report.
  32. 3.04      10/93  Added detection of 400 more MicroChannel cards,
  33.                  bringing the total to over 1,100.
  34. 3.03      10/93  On the Diagnostics screen, in the IRQ and DMA lists,
  35.                  Snooper no longer reports "Reserved" for resources not
  36.                  assigned to a hardware device. If the resource doesn't
  37.                  appear to be reserved, Snooper reports "Available." If
  38.                  the resource has been reserved, Snooper reports "In
  39.                  use." Also, DMA channel four is no longer detected
  40.                  because it is used internally and isn't available for
  41.                  installable devices.
  42. 3.02      10/93  Removed CMOS checksum on the Main screen's Extended
  43.                  Memory report. The CMOS screen will tell you if there
  44.                  is an error.
  45. 3.01      10/93  Added differentiation of DOS versions 4.00 and 4.01.
  46. 3.00      10/93  Added detection of Plug-'n'-Play capability to the BIOS
  47.                  report. This specification allows P-n-P ISA cards to be
  48.                  automatically configured through software, like MCA and
  49.                  EISA cards are now.
  50. 2.99      10/93  Snooper will now report if the computer has both
  51.                  MicroChannel and ISA buses.

  53.                  bringing the total to over 110.
  54. 2.96      10/93  Added detection of several disk caches to the main

  56.                  Keyboard report slightly, with no loss of info.
  57. 2.86      10/93  Oops! For some reason we thought floppy drives used DMA
  58.                  channel three, when actually they use channel two.
  59.                  Snooper's display has been updated to reflect this
  60.                  revelation.
  61. 2.85      10/93  Added detection of XGA amd XGA-2 video to Video report.
  62.                  This will work on MicroChannel bus systems.
  63. 2.80      10/93  After exiting the built-in editor, Snooper will prompt
  64.                  the user to reboot only if changes were made and the
  65.                  file was successfully saved. Snooper will wait for a
  66.                  keypress if there was an error saving the file.
  67.                  Otherwise, Snooper will immediately return you to the
  68.                  Main Screen. If you choose to reboot, Snooper will
  69.                  pause in case write-delayed caching is enabled, to
  70.                  ensure the file is actually written to the disk.
  71. 2.78       9/93  Fixed an apparently long-standing bug that prevented
  72.                  Snooper from recognizing some older IBM models and
  73.                  others by name.
  74. 2.76       9/93  Snooper should less often report gibberish in the "IDE
  75.                  model" report.
  76. 2.75       9/93  Defined default scales for the graphs on the Benchmark
  77.                  screen, according to CPU type. So, for example, the
  78.                  default scales for a 486 machine would be higher than
  79.                  one for a 386. Now, when a machine is so fast it makes
  80.                  the graph change color, it means the machine is fast
  81.                  for its class.
  82. 2.70       9/93  Added reboot function to allow the user to reboot from
  83.                  within Snooper after changing the CMOS or CONFIG.SYS or
  84.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  85. 2.68       9/93  Improved Snooper's disk benchmark, adding sequential
  86.                  reads to the random ones and computing a weighted
  87.                  score.
  88. 2.66       9/93  Snooper should be able to report more information about
  89.                  a second hard drive, if there is one.
  90. 2.65       9/93  Added detection of DOS 6's DoubleSpace drive
  91.                  compression, reported on the Disk Status line.

  99.                  Snooper can now report half-megabyte values (e.g.,
  100.                  1.5M, 2.5M). You may have a bit more memory than
  101.                  Snooper reports. For example, you may have 2M when
  102.                  Snooper reports 1.5M. Under newer versions of the VESA
  103.                  spec, Snooper should always report video memory
  104.                  accurately.
  105. 2.61       8/93  Snooper will now retore the cursor upon exit, and set
  106.                  ERRORLEVEL to at least 32, if a runtime error occurs
  107.                  (but that *never* happens!).
  108. 2.60       8/93  Added one to the Cylinders report for hard drives. This
  109.                  should now match what the CMOS reports.
  110. 2.59       8/93  Improved error-reporting while trying to save a .CFG
  111.                  file in Setup screen. Snooper will now report if the
  112.                  disk is full, an existing .CFG file is read-only, etc.
  113. 2.58       8/93  The benchmark graphs now change color if they change
  114.                  scale, so you can see at a distance that the scale is
  115.                  not the default. Also, the benchmark graphs are
  116.                  retained when you return to the main screen and then go
  117.                  back to the Benchmark screen.
  118. 2.57       8/93  Added detection of fax modems, and the classes they
  119.                  support, on the Diagnostics screen. The new report,
  120.                  "fax class," will display for example, "0,1" if your
  121.                  fax modem supports classes zero and one.
  122. 2.52       8/93  Removed detection and supression of "fake" Novell
  123.                  parallel ports on Diagnostics screen. Now you can see
  124.                  the port status that other programs see, even if these
  125.                  ports aren't physically present. Also, Snooper now only
  126.                  looks for three LPT ports, not four.
  127. 2.51       8/93  Removed detection of Ballpoint mice because there were
  128.                  too many false positives.
  129. 2.50       8/93  Added beeps to alert you to error conditions (e.g.
  130.                  invalid drive). This should be helpful especially to
  131.                  visually-impaired users. When you hear a beep, look at
  132.                  the message line in the lower right corner to see what
  133.                  the beep was for. The beeps can be toggled on and off
  134.                  via the Setup screen.
  135. 2.48       8/93  Added Benchmark screen, accessible with <Alt-E> (hey,
  136.                  <Alt-B> was already being used!), performs CPU, video,
  137.                  and hard disk benchmarks.
  138. 2.38       8/93  Added Adaptec SCSI host adapter identification. It is
  139.                  reported on the same line as IDE model would be.
  140. 2.37       8/93  Changed the log filename from SNOOPER to SNOOPLOG to
  141.                  make it consistent with the SNOOPCFG variable (see
  142.                  below).
  143. 2.36       8/93  You can now define a SNOOPCFG environment variable to
  144.                  designate the configuration file Snooper should read
  145.                  (e.g. "set snoopcfg=c:\control\johnv.cfg"). Very useful
  146.                  on networks when set in a login script or in
  147.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT (don't forget Alt-A will let you edit
  148.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT!).
  149. 2.35       8/93  Added help line on the bottom line of each screen;
  150.                  removed the much shorter help lines above the message
  151.                  boxes.
  152. 2.32       8/93  Changed the keystroke used to print an invoice from <R>
  153.                  for Register to <O> for Order, perhaps making it
  154.                  clearer for some of you.
  155. 2.31       7/93  Improved Setup screen's user interface to match that of
  156.                  the CMOS screen (see below).
  157. 2.30       7/93  Added field to allow or disallow CMOS editing. This
  158.                  feature is for network administrators who want to
  159.                  prevent knowledgable-enough-to-be-dangerous users from
  160.                  changing their computers' configurations.
  161. 2.29       7/93  Added CMOS configuration viewing/editing screen. Press
  162.                  <Alt-M> from the main screen to see it. If CMOS editing
  163.                  is allowed (check the Setup screen), you can use the
  164.                  highlighted letters, and the arrow and Tab keys to move
  165.                  from one field to another. Once you're on the field you
  166.                  wish to change, press +/- or PgUp/PgDn to modify that
  167.                  field. If CMOS editing is disallowed, you will only be
  168.                  able to view the CMOS configuration.
  169. 2.19       7/93  Snooper now searches for ROM BIOS extensions every
  170.                  256 bytes instead of every 2K, sniffing out more
  171.                  adapter cards.
  172. 2.18       7/93  Snooper can now differentiate between Dell 450DEs and
  173.                  466DEs. Changed the order form into an invoice. Now
  174.                  business users can pay for Snooper on a purchase order
  175.                  and already have an invoice to send to Accounting.
  176. 2.17       6/93  Fixed detection of 2.8M drives. It should work now.
  177. 2.16*   6/26/93  Fixed minor cosmetic bug in drive list. Also, now you
  178.                  can press <Escape> or <Enter> when changing default
  179.                  disk drive in Setup screen.
  180. 2.15*   6/18/93  Fixed minor bug that prevented you from using cursor
  181.                  keys to switch from drive A: to the next drive in a
  182.                  system with one floppy and a hard or network drive.
  183.                  Snooper no longer displays the B: drive in its drive
  184.                  list if the system has no physical B: drive.
  185. 2.14       6/93  You can now print the display to PRN with <Alt-P>.
  186.                  <Alt-F> now logs the system files.  <Alt-L> still logs
  187.                  to a file.
  188. 2.13       6/93  Added detection of DOS revision level for versions 5
  189.                  and up. It appears as a letter after the DOS version.
  190. 2.12       5/93  Snooper now more-vigorously checks the IDE model for
  191.                  garbage characters. This line should now be blank for
  192.                  non-IDE drives.
  193. 2.11       5/93  In the editor, you can now restore a deleted line with
  194.                  <Ctrl-R>. To restore other deleted text (e.g. words),
  195.                  continue to use <Ctrl-U>.
  196. 2.10       5/93  Added network information screen, accessible via
  197.                  <Alt-N>. Currently, this screen provides info only on
  198.                  Novell networks. See the manual for more details.
  199.                  Removed the Western Digital network card detection
  200.                  routine, as it turned out to be the responsible for
  201.                  Snooper breaking the network connection. Now when you
  202.                  use the Diagnostics screen on a network, you usually
  203.                  stay connected.
  204. 2.09       5/93  Added detection of Pentium (tm) (and Hexium?)
  205. processors.
  206. 2.08       5/93  If your system has more than 19 logical drives, Snooper
  207.                  now displays them in two rows. Also, the end bracket
  208.                  immediately follows the last drive letter.
  209. 2.07       5/93  Now you can press <Enter> to indicate "Yes" to "(Y/n)?"
  210.                  prompts in the editor (e.g. saving the file).
  211. 2.06       5/93  Added detection of over 700 MicroChannel adapter cards
  212.                  via the new Bus Screen. Access it with <Alt-B>. See the
  213.                  manual for more details.
  214. 2.05       5/93  Improved detection of network drives. It's accurate
  215.                  now, but the minimum DOS version had to be raised to
  216.                  3.10. This shouldn't cause a problem for most of you.
  217. 2.04       4/93  Added detection of Toshiba DOS and Olivetti DOS.
  218. 2.03       4/93  Added detection of several more Dell computers.
  219. 2.02       4/93  Added fifty new computer types, mostly IBMs. Snooper
  220.                  can now recognize over 100 computers by name.
  221. 2.01       4/93  Snooper can now distinguish between LANtastic and LAN
  222.                  Manager. Added report of PC LAN and LAN Manager
  223.                  versions.
  224. 2.00*   3/30/93  Improved VESA video memory detection. Snooper now
  225.                  retrieves the memory amount directly from the VESA BIOS
  226.                  if the VESA version is at least 1.01. Also fixed a bug
  227.                  that caused the VESA version to be reported
  228.                  incorrectly.
  229. 1.99       3/93  Added detection of a Logitech mouse driver's version.
  230.                  Also, in the IRQ list on the Diagnostics screen, if you
  231.                  have a new enough mouse driver, Snooper will report if
  232.                  it's a TSR loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  233.                  ("MOUSE.COM"), or a device driver loaded in your
  234.                  CONFIG.SYS file ("MOUSE.SYS").
  235. 1.98       3/93  Added more rigorous testing to determine if a parallel
  236.                  port really exists before testing its IRQ and status.
  237.                  Rearranged Parallel Port Status reports.
  238. 1.97       3/93  Expanded configuration file with blank space so we can
  239.                  add more options in the future while maintaining
  240.                  backward compatibility with existing .CFG files.
  241. 1.96       3/93  Added report of parallel port IRQ. Keep in mind that
  242.                  many I/O cards with parallel ports do not generate the
  243.                  IRQ properly. This report uses parentheses like the COM
  244.                  port IRQ (see below).
  245. 1.95       3/93  Added indication of a COM port's IRQ being enabled. If
  246.                  the IRQ number does not appear in parentheses on the
  247.                  Diagnostics screen, that COM port's IRQ was already
  248.                  enabled before Snooper was run. If the IRQ is written
  249.                  in parentheses, the IRQ is not active on that port.
  250.                  Also, COM port info is centered now.
  251. 1.94       3/93  Added detection of the port address of Western Digital
  252.                  and compatible network cards, displayed on the
  253.                  Diagnostics screen.
  254. 1.93       3/93  Added an internal text editor for CONFIG.SYS,
  255.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT, and SNOOPER.LOG files. Added
  256.                  configuration option for toggling between using the
  257.                  internal editor or an external one.
  258. 1.92       3/93  If you were using only a tiny percentage of a disk,
  259.                  Snooper may have shown an empty bar graph, perhaps
  260.                  misleading you into thinking the disk was empty. Now if
  261.                  any amount of disk space is being used, Snooper shows
  262.                  at least one block in the graph.
  263. 1.91       3/93  Added logging of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
  264.                  From Snooper's main or Diagnostics screens with <Alt-P>
  265.                  and from the command line, with the /P switch. This
  266.                  feature will copy the contents of both files to the log
  267.                  file. The switch can be used with or without the
  268.                  logging switch, /L. It will use the log filename
  269.                  specified with /L.
  270. 1.90       2/93  Changed format of configuration file. Config files made
  271.                  with earlier versions will be incompatible with future
  272.                  versions of Snooper, so just delete them and make new
  273.                  ones.
  274. 1.89       2/93  Instead of prohibiting you from invoking Snooper's
  275.                  Diagnostics screen under multitaskers and networks, now
  276.                  Snooper just warns about the dangers involved and asks
  277.                  if you wish to continue.
  278. 1.88       2/93  Fixed editor loading routine to correctly load a batch
  279.                  file called EDIT.BAT by loading a secondary command
  280.                  processor (e.g., COMMAND.COM, NDOS.COM). Snooper now
  281.                  ensures the relevant files exist before invoking the
  282.                  editor. Added a wait for keypress after editing before
  283.                  restoring Snooper's screen.
  284. 1.87       2/93  Reassigned editing keys: <Alt-C> loads only CONFIG.SYS,
  285.                  and <Alt-A> loads only AUTOEXEC.BAT. Using <Alt-A> for
  286.                  this feature forced us to change the (Advanced)
  287.                  Diagnostics key to <Alt-D> for Diagnostics.
  288. 1.86       2/93  Improved Setup screen's readability by aligning default
  289.                  options and changing the choices from Yes/No to
  290.                  Yes/Auto.
  291. 1.85       2/93  Reversed action of PgUp/PgDn, Up/Down, Left/Right in
  292.                  help screens and main screen to make those keystrokes
  293.                  more in line with convention.  Pressing PgUp will now
  294.                  move you, for example, from page three to page two of

  333.                  <Alt-E> at Snooper's main screen.  The editor must be
  334.                  named EDIT.COM, EDIT.EXE, or EDIT.BAT, and it may
  335.                  reside in the current directory or on the path. 
  336.                  "Ed-It!" version 3.0 (a public domain editor, included)
  337.                  will open both files at once in separate windows. 
  338.                  Other editors may only open CONFIG.SYS.  You can open
  339.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT with their editors' Open File command.
  340. 1.72      10/92  Added on-line registration feature.  Press "F1" for
  341.                  help, then "R" to print an order form.  You will be
  342.                  asked what port to print the form to.
  343. 1.71      10/92  Snooper now shows you all valid drive letters, right
  344.                  next to "Disk."  The current drive letter is
  345.                  highlighted and capitalized.  The Volume Label report
  346.                  was moved down; it's now the first disk report in the
  347.                  column.  Due to limited screen space, the Total
  348.                  Clusters report was removed (CHKDSK can tell you if you
  349.                  really need it).  
  350. 1.70      10/92  Added detection of Oak VGA cards.

  358.                  clipboard using Shift-Delete.  The display is pasted as

  362.                  updating its time display (just press the spacebar for

  412.                  which cause Snooper automatically to show the invalid
  413.                  characters on its syntax help screen.
  414. 1.41       1/92  Added Desqview mode switch, /D, to force Snooper to use
  415.                  the BIOS when writing to the screen.  Snooper normally
  416.                  detects Desqview and switches to this mode
  417.                  automatically but some of you may want to use it for
  418.                  other environments.

  420.                  COM port or IRQ level.
  421. 1.39       1/92  Implemented better game port detection.  It should work
  422.                  on AT class machines now.  Also fixed minor bug that
